There She Is…

Miss America!!!!  Even saying those two words still today sends chills up my spine.  I simply cannot believe that I am Miss America 2009!  (Once a Miss America…always a Miss America)

Even though it has been a year and a half since I passed on my title, I still remember exactly what it was like to live that lifestyle for an entire year.  Every Miss America has that in common.  That’s why we are all so close and even call each other “Sister.”  We have all had a similar experience that can only be shared by the few 84 women who have ever held the prestigious title (65 still living).  It doesn’t matter where we come from, or how old we are, we instantly connect.

Our current Miss America 2011 is the beautiful and talented Teresa Scanlan from Nebraska.  Teresa was only 17-years-old when she won the title of Miss America, but you would never know this outstanding young woman just graduated from high school.  In a conversation with Teresa, you would believe you were talking to a 35-year-old, well-established, very successful business person who could potentially be running for office or is already a reputable, high-class lawyer.  She is extremely impressive and I have never questioned the judges decision on choosing this young woman to be our national representative.

Teresa has, of course, been traveling the world over as Miss America and checking off all of the new states she’s gotten to experience.  One of those new states was my home state of Indiana.  Over the last couple of days, Teresa and her tour manager, Julie (who was also my tour manager) were special guests of the Indianpolis 500.  I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to spend time with them.  Thursday, Michael and I headed downtown to pick them up and make a straight shoot back  up north to my house where my husband grilled out for us and we gathered around the dining room table to catch up.  We had the most amazing time together.  In fact, we had such a good time, that we ended up staying out entirely too late and I didn’t get the ladies back to their hotel until 1:00am.

Saturday, Brian and I made our way back downtown, this time to join the ladies for dessert at their hotel to cut down on travel time and allow for them to get to bed a little earlier than two nights before.  Again, great conversation led the way for a wonderful night of getting to know Teresa, my “sister” even better.

We are all so proud of our newest Miss America.  She represents us with class, dignity, respect and integrity.  We couldn’t ask for more in a titleholder than our very own Teresa Scanlan.
